Mercedes Schlapp has no easy task in her position as White House adviser for strategic communication. The White House's strategic communications advisor Mercedes Schlapp has to face a variety of challenges. They include Presidents who has his own director of communication and a variety of legal battles that could disrupt the messaging strategy. However, throughout it all Schlapp remains determined to focus on her task at hand, working closely with White House's political affairs and legislative affairs teams and policy shops as with the larger communications team for policy-related rollouts. In her current position, she has concentrated on a variety of issues including school safety and the use of opioids. She has not had much contact with media outlets in her job. The media attention she received in March came when she was named one of the candidates to succeed Hope Hicks. Mercedes Schlapp does not have a straightforward job as White House strategic communication adviser. Mercedes Schlapp has to deal with an administration plagued by various concerns, which includes a president acting as his own director of communications and Cabinet Secretaries who are embroiled in their respective controversies. Schlapp never wavered from her mission, and has was closely involved with White House policy and political teams. She has focused on topics including school safety, opioids and infrastructure, along with trade. As of now, Schlapp does not deal extensively with journalists. The company received lots of press attention after she was announced as a candidate to replace Hope Hicks, the communications director. The fight turned ugly. Schlapp's close ally, Tony Sayegh as well as an alternative candidate with the same name, Tony, have been fighting on the news. Schlapp said to that the Washington Examiner that she spoke with Sayegh regarding a recent negative article on him.
